Dr. Frank LaMar Jr., a partner at Elmwood Dental Group in Brighton, used the popular TV show to explain his specialty, which comprehensively restores badly broken-down or missing teeth.
The Perinton resident, 48, realized in dental school that he enjoyed working with porcelain, acrylics and other art materials, and could have a major impact on improving the quality of life for patients, some of whose treatments can last up to four months.
"Anything in medicine and dentistry, it's important there's some empathy involved," LaMar said. "This does change lives, and that's pretty rewarding."
According to the New York State Department of Labor, employment opportunities in the Finger Lakes region for prosthodontists is expected to increase 33.3 percent between 2010 and 2020.
